Dr. Yates is a native of Louisville, Kentucky. He is married and has three children. He has served on the executive council for the West Virginia Dental Association and has served as President of the West Virginia Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. He is a former professor of surgery at Marshall University School of Medicine in Huntington, West Virginia. He also has a clinical faculty appointment with West Virginia University School of Dental Medicine, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
